Police are searching for a suspect after shots rang out in northeast Edmonton on Friday night.

According to police, officers were called to the scene of a shooting in the neighbourhood of Ozerna just before 9 p.m. and arrived to find a man with gunshot wounds lying on the sidewalk in front of a home – he was pronounced dead on scene.

EPS Insp. Regan James said the victim, believed to be in his late 40s or early 50s, does not appear to be connected with the homeowner or home involved in the incident.

Police are searching for the lone driver of a black, older model Toyota sedan, possibly a Corolla or Camry. The vehicle was last seen fleeing the area southbound on Ozerna Road.

Officials described the suspect as:

  • East Indian male
  • Late 20s to early 30s in age
  • Short dark hair
  • Average build
  • Between 5’8” and 5’ 10” tall
  • Between 180 and 200 lbs.
  • Wearing a dark sweater and blue jeans

Police are also searching for four men, not considered suspects, who witnesses saw in a van at the time of the incident.

“I can assure you that this is an event that seems unrelated to the nature of the neighbourhood [which] rarely sees any kind of police occupation. I would suggest nobody is in danger in the neighbourhood,” Insp. James told CTV News.

The victim has not yet been identified. An autopsy is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The EPS Homicide Section is investigating the death and asking anyone with information to contact police at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
