Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) will now operate under a provincially reviewed framework. The Ministries of Transportation, Treasury Board and Finance have completed a review that allows ride sharing businesses to have appropriate insurance coverage. They will also be subject to licensing and police information checks.

Alberta is the first Canadian province to develop TNC-specific policies, and the provincial government, per the Transportation Safety Amendment Act, can now regulate the responsibilities of these private companies.

The government must clarify the obligations TNCs must follow to operate in Alberta, specify that TNC drivers must have a Class 1, 2, or 4 driver’s license, and establish a standard for acceptable police checks for drivers.

“Our primary goal is to ensure all of Alberta’s road users – drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists – are safe,” Minister of Transportation Brian Mason said. “This regulation provides clear rules and guidelines for Transportation Network Companies who want to operate in our province.”

This regulation will be in effect Tuesday, June 28.
