Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan RCMP and EMS responded to the scene of a double fatality accident on Highway 16 near the entrance to Elk Island National Park Wednesday.

In a news release, RCMP reported that two pick-up trucks travelling west-bound collided and were forced off the road. Two occupants, one man and one woman, in one of the trucks were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other truck was not injured.

Police said the two people who were killed were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision and were ejected from their vehicle.

Highway 16 westbound was closed to traffic and motorists were being diverted to the eastbound lane while the investigation took place Wednesday afternoon.
