A 29-year-old woman is in Calgary hospital in critical condition following an early morning dog attack in the town of Sundre, located about 250 kilometres south west of Edmonton.

According to Sundre RCMP, the woman was visiting a friend’s home when the attack occurred.  RCMP responded to the home at approximately 2:00 a.m.  On arrival, they discovered the victim suffering from extensive injuries to her hands and face.

The woman was transported by EMS to the Sundre Urgent Care Centre.  Due to the extent of her injuries, STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched to transfer the woman to a Calgary area hospital.

RCMP officers, local animal control and local veterinarians attempted to control the two pitbulls.  One dog was tranquilized and removed from the home.  The second pitbull attacked an RCMP officer and was fatally shot.

An RCMP investigation into the attack is underway.
