A central Alberta farmer accused of chasing an alleged thief off his land and shooting him as he ran away has selected a trial by judge and jury.

38-year-old Brian Knight, is facing a long list of charges for allegedly taking the law into his own hands. He is charged with seven offences including assault with a weapon, assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Back in late March of this year, 31-year-old Harold Groening was allegedly stealing a quad from Knight's Bashaw-area home, when police said the owner began chasing him and fired two shots, hitting him.

He says he was taken back to the original scene and was repeatedly punched and hit with a pipe.

Another man was also accused in the incident, 23-year-old Kyle Rosenthal. Groening is facing charges of theft and stolen property.
