Edmonton police have charged one person in connection to a weekend assault in the downtown area, which left one man suffering from critical injuries – injuries he has since succumbed to.

Police said Sunday that a serious assault occurred just after 11 am in front of the Boyle McCauley Health Centre, located near 106 Avenue and 96 Street.

Due to the incident, the 47 year-old male victim suffered from severe head trauma, and was rushed to hospital.

The injuries the victim suffered were so severe, Homicide Detectives took over the investigation.

On Tuesday, police said Courtney Alex McDonald, 30, was charged with one count of aggravated assault.

However, since the assault charge was laid, the assault victim died in hospital – Police said detectives are now working with the Crown to upgrade the charge to manslaughter.
