Officials with the City of Edmonton have issued an official fire ban for the entire city.
The fire ban, which went into effect Tuesday, prohibits open burning, backyard fire pits, solid fuel cook stoves in parks and fireworks within the city.
The city said the ban was called due to the dry, warm and windy conditions.
CTV’s Josh Classen said Tuesday afternoon that conditions were at a -5 dewpoint and 15 percent relative humidity – which meant conditions in the city continued to be dry.
As of Tuesday, the fire danger rating for the city was in the ‘Extreme’ category.
The ban will be in effect until further notice – the city said anyone who breaks the fire ban could face fines, or even charges, including covering the cost of emergency services if they’re called in.
The ban comes after city officials issued a fire warning for the May long weekend - in the first two weeks of May, firefighters dealt with about 216 outside fires.
