A violent night has left a number of people in hospital with a variety of injuries, after police were called to several incidents involving weapons.

Edmonton police officials said officers were kept busy on New Year’s Eve, responding to an increase in calls.

Officials said calls to 911 spiked between 4:30 a.m. and 5: 30 a.m., when officers were called to a number of weapons complaints – calls included two shootings and four stabbings.

Police said the first shooting was reported near 22 Avenue and 53 Street, the second was reported near 93 Street and 111 Avenue.

In the first case, two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Then, officials with the EPS Downtown Division told CTV News a number of calls came in reporting shots fired in the area of 111 Avenue and 93 Street, at about 4:30 a.m.

Officers arrived on the scene to chaos, police said – but didn’t find anyone suffering from injuries on the scene.

A short time later, police said calls from the Royal Alexandra Hospital came in saying two males had been brought in with gunshot wounds – they had arrived at the hospital, but weren’t taken by ambulance.

One of the injured individuals was in serious condition, the other suffered non-life threatening injuries – later Friday, both remained in hospital.

EPS said there was no suspect description, and investigators remained on the scene into the afternoon and 111 Avenue between 92 Street and 94 Street was closed off throughout much of the day.

The two shootings are not believed to be connected.

Police were also called to 90 Avenue and 91 Street at about 5:30 a.m., after a man was allegedly jumped while walking home – he suffered stab wounds to his hand.

Another man is in serious, but stable condition after an attack where a machete was used in the area of 118 Avenue and 101 Street at about 7 a.m.

EPS said the sudden spike in crime could be linked to warmer temperatures coinciding with New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“I think the weather was a factor in this, it was quite mild, and a lot more people were out and about experiencing some of the activities within the downtown core,” EPS Staff Sgt. Ray Akbar said.

No arrests have been made.
