Tens of thousands of Facebook users have issued angry complaints to the popular networking site and in return Facebook has backed down on the controversial changes to its user policies.

Facebook is reversing a rule that had suggested the site could claim rights to all material posted on user pages including photos and video.

Facebook now said it doesn't claim to own content uploaded by any of its users.

The site also said it will continue to work on refining rules to determine who controls the information on Facebook pages.

On Tuesday, CTV News reported on the site's latest update to the terms of use for Facebook, posted earlier this month, which informed users that the site can keep and use pictures of all users, even after a user takes them down.

The condensed version of the licences subsection read:

"You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual... worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publish... display... modify, edit... adapt, create derivative works and distribute... any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service."

Facebook currently has 175 million worldwide users.
