An Edmonton lawyer and his son have launched a $500,000 lawsuit after they allege police used excessive force on them during the Oilers' playoff celebrations on Whyte Avenue.

Brian Fish said the ordeal began on June 17, 2006, after he got a phone call from his son, who was on Whyte Avenue at the time.

His son said he thought the police were getting too rough with one of his friends, so Fish said he decided to grab his camera take some pictures of the crowd.

Shortly after Fish began taken pictures of police arresting revellers, he alleges an officer told him to stop and then tasered him for taking more pictures.

The statement of claim also alleges Fish's son Nigel was also thrown down and arrested by an officer.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

The family has since filed a complaint and the Law Enforcement Review Board is currently investigating the case.

Yet Fish said he doesn't believe the review is enough.

"They just take the statements of police at face value they did not really look behind the statement and analyze them." He said. "They came back with no basis for laying charges so that to me is quite frankly disgusting."

The suit includes five police officers, Chief Mike Boyd and a former police chief.

The Edmonton Police would not comment on the case because it is before the courts.
