“I’m empty inside right now.”

They’re the words of a grieving father, who spoke to CTV News a day after his daughter died in a violent car crash on one of the province’s most dangerous highways.

The crash happened on Sunday, September 9 – in the morning.

Andy Germain’s 52-year-old daughter Juliette was in Breynat, off of Highway 63, for a family reunion at the time.

“We were going to church, and then for breakfast,” Andy Germain said. “It didn’t happen that way.”

Several family members were on their way in a few cars – Juliette was driving her Dodge Neon, and her grandson, Jayden Rosario, 7 was with her.

Andy Germain was driving ahead of his daughter, and witnessed the horrific crash in his rear-view mirror.

He was also the first on the scene – minutes later, his son, Juliette’s brother Aurele – a former volunteer firefighter - also arrived.

“I didn’t realize it was my sister when I got there,” Aurele Germain said. “But I found out it was.

“It’s devastating, but I helped as much as I could.”

His sister was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have said its likely Juliette Germain is at fault in this crash, as evidence and witness reports suggest she pulled out in front of oncoming traffic – where she crashed into a Chevy Impala carrying two men.

The 28-year-old passenger of that vehicle was also pronounced dead at the scene, and the 26-year-old driver is in serious condition in hospital.

Now, the Germain family is joining the call to separate the north and south bound lanes of the highway, in an effort to improve safety.

Andy Germain said a twinned highway may not have prevented the deadly crash, but it would allow drivers enough time and space in case a mistake happens.

“There are two sheriffs that said ‘Twinning the highway will not help, because the speeders will still be there’,” Germain said. “That’s stupid to me.”

Juliette Germain has five children; her grandson is still in hospital in critical condition.

The names of the other two victims have not been released.

Speed, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.
