Now that there is an official schedule for the Oilers, fans say they are looking forward to the return of hockey.

After 113 days, the new NHL agreement was signed late Saturday night.

With dozens of fans watching, the Oilers took to the ice at Hawrelak Park on Sunday for a game of shinny.

“There were a number of polls that were taken where Canadian fans said they weren't going to come back but they came back,” Dan Mason, a sports management professor at the University of Alberta, told CTV News.

Mason said many fans missed the game more than they expected to.

“I think fortunately for the teams in Alberta there are so many people that love hockey and like their teams.

“There's not going to be the pinch like you might see in some of the other markets where it's more difficult to keep fans in their seats if they're not winning,” he added.

Nikita Goultiave says she is excited for the first games.

“Oh ya, if the NHL is back, of course I'm going to visit some games.”

Teresa Hong said she had her eye on the more long term prospects of the team.

“Just as long as the Oilers have a shot at making it into the playoffs, I'll be watching,” she smiled.

Oilers president, Patrick LaForge,  says the team is happy to be back for their fans.

“On behalf of the organization they have my apology,” he told CTV News.

“That’s a process nobody should have to go through.”

The first three official practices will be open to the public.

They run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Rexall Place.

Doors open at 10 a.m.
