RCMP have determined the fire that destroyed the Pioneer Hotel in late February was started accidentally.

Firefighters from Killam and Sedgewick, along with RCMP from the Killam/Forestburg detachment and Emergency Medical Services, were called to the fire at the Pioneer Hotel in Sedgewick just after midnight on Feb. 22.

The only person inside the hotel, the owner, managed to escape safely, but the blaze continued to burn throughout the night, destroying the 107 year old building in only a few hours.

On Friday, RCMP said fire investigators from Flagstaff County and the province had determined the blaze was accidental.
