It sounds like something that would be illegal, but at one point it was perfectly legal to park your vehicle on your front yard. But the City has stepped in and made lawns a no-parking zone.
City council amended a bylaw Monday banning vehicles from front yards. The new bylaw prevents homeowners from parking their vehicles or the utility trailers right in front of their homes.
A clause was also included that a driveway cannot encompass the entire front yard, meaning even if you pave your entire lawn, it's still illegal.
Eric Dostie parks his damaged car just mere steps from his front door. He says he doesn't agree with the bylaw.
"To me, they're pushing a little too far into peoples' business," says Dostie. "We got better things to do than worrying about people's cars on their lawns."
The City says this new bylaw is in the best interest for all citizens.
"If that means limiting parking to appropriate places such as garages or rear driveway or something like that, that's entirely appropriate," said Scott Mackie with the City's Planning and Development.
Dostie says he does plan on towing his vehicle away. In the meantime, a bylaw officer won't be knocking on people's doors to remove their car unless they get a complaint.
The City says the change was made after getting so many complaints over the years by Edmontonians upset with front yards being used as parking spots.
The cost of the fine wasn't available at the time.
