Police west of Edmonton are investigating a fatal collision that left one person dead Monday evening.

Spruce Grove and Stony Plain RCMP were called to the crash at the intersection of Golden Spike Road (Range Road 273) and Highway 628 at about 7:50 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016.

According to police, a van headed westbound on Highway 628 did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection, and was hit by a southbound Ford pickup truck.

The van had three individuals inside, a 26-year-old female driver, and two passengers: a 31-year-old man and a five-year-old. The driver and the child were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the male passenger was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The truck was driven by an 18-year-old male, who was treated on the scene by paramedics.

An RCMP collision analyst was called to the scene to help determine the cause of the crash, and traffic was rerouted from the area for several hours.
