RCMP conducted CheckStops throughout the Province resulting in a high number of 481 impaired related charges.

That number includes 11 people charged with being impaired by a drug and 36 people refused to provide police with a breath sample.

The number of impaired driving charges is down however from 2007 by about 194.

Impaired Driving Enforcement was selected as the focus area for the month of December in support of the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan.

"There are too many irresponsible drivers who think they can drink alcohol and still drive safely, despite the fact that in 2007, 99 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes," says Inspector James Stiles in a news release.
