A three-vehicle collision in Edmonton’s northeast has left one man dead and another in critical condition.

According to police, at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, officers were called to the scene along 167 Avenue, just west of 59A Street.

Police said a man driving a Dodge Avenger allegedly struck the occupants of a Chevy Cavalier from behind “at a high rate of speed” – sending the car spinning into the eastbound lanes where it then collided with an oncoming Mitsubishi Lancer.

The lone passenger in the Cavalier, a 27-year-old man, was reportedly thrown from the vehicle after colliding with the Lancer – he was later pronounced dead on scene by paramedics.

The Cavalier and Avenger then collided a second time before both cars came to a stop on a nearby boulevard.

The driver of the Cavalier remains in hospital in critical condition.

Officials said both the driver and passenger of the Lancer were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Avenger sustained minor injuries.

EPS major collision investigation unit continues to investigate.

Charges have not yet been laid. No other details have been released.
