Two inmates at Drumheller Correction Facility have died.

RCMP said Nicholas Whynott, 24, was found unconscious in his cell shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday.

Whynott was taken to Drumheller hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While police were at the jail investigating the incident a second inmate, Derek Upton, 35, was also discovered unconscious in his cell.

Upton was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

According to Correction Service of Canada Whynott was serving a six-year sentence.

Upton was serving an indetermined amount of time for first degree murder.

An autopsy for both inmates has been scheduled for next week.

Police said both inmates were the sole occupants of their individual cells.
