Most motorcycle owners may be about to cover up their motorbikes for the winter, but come next spring some could have a new license plate.

The provincial government's veterans' license plate program will expand to motorcycles next spring.

"Albertans respect the sacrifice of the men and women in the Canadian Forces, and the veterans' license plate is an instantly recognizable reminder of that sacrifice," Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar said. "We owe a lot to veterans for the freedoms and rights we enjoy today,

"The provincial government is happy to provide yet another way of showing our appreciating for all veterans have done."

The province said more than 20,000 veterans' plates have been issued since the program began in early 2005.

The dedicated plates are available to retired forces members who have been honorably discharged, and members of the RCMP or other police departments who have served under NATO or the United Nations.

Last year, the province, along with the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-Northwest Territories Command, expanded eligibility to current Canadian Forces members with at least three years of service.

Alberta will become the third province to offer veterans' motorcycle plates.

The plates will be available in April 2012.
