Innisfail RCMP have confirmed one person is dead after an explosion in a home in the community on Wednesday.

CTV News has confirmed the victim of the blast is 23-year-old Victoria Shachtay.

RCMP said the explosion occurred in a townhouse located on 51 Avenue at about 9 a.m. Friday.

Another woman in her 30s was also in the apartment, but did not suffer any serious injuries in the blast.

Residents of three other apartments inside the building were evacuated; however investigators said most of the damage was contained in the apartment.

RCMP explosives experts and members of the major crimes unit are investigating.

Police said they will treat the explosion as murder until more details are found – to ensure all evidence is collected.

"The package as we know it right now just showed up at the house," Sgt. Patrick Webb said Friday. "Now, exactly how it got there, if somebody dropped it off, or if it was a late delivery – all of those aspects we're still looking into."

An autopsy has been scheduled for next week in Calgary.
