The RCMP have released the name of the man involved in what police have called the random shooting of a woman near Stettler Monday.
Police say Dustin Goddu, 31, of Red Deer, did not know Krista Dryden, the woman who was shot while walking along an area road Monday morning.
Stettler RCMP said they were called to the area around 9 a.m. on a report that a woman had been shot.
Immediately following the incident, a STARS helicopter was dispatched out of Calgary, and transported the shooting victim from the Stettler hospital to Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
Police quickly located the suspect, but he fled from officers on the scene – however police managed to contain him to a forested area near Fleet, Alberta.
RCMP confirmed the suspect turned the gun on himself several hours later.
"He was found in the same area, it's a treed, forested area just north of Highway 12, east of Castor, east of Fleet," Staff Sgt. Shawn Lemay said Monday. "[He was found] within the area we had contained earlier in the day."
CTV News has learned Goddu lived and worked in Red Deer, he was a funeral director at Parkland Funeral Home, a position he had held for seven years.
Dryden's parents said the shooting was random – and at last word, she was awake, but heavily sedated in hospital – she is expected to recover.
