In a fax sent out to CTV News, officials at the Alexander First Nation announced a media blackout had been imposed.

The fax, sent to CTV News Thursday, said the Chief and Council had met that day and had imposed “a complete and total media blackout for all forms of media on all Alexander First Nation Lands.”

The statements goes on to say:

“In light of recent media broadcasts, the Alexander First Nation is dealing with negative impacts as a result of these biased and uninformed statements. The impact is negative amongst our membership and we ask that you respect the decision of our people.”

The notice came less than a week after Morinville RCMP said Chief Kurt Burnstick had been charged with sexual assault.

That charge was laid following a months-long investigation by police that started in December, 2015. It’s alleged he assaulted a woman he knew.

The letter was signed by Burnstick, and four of six councillors.
