The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after two RCMP officers fired at a suspect during a traffic stop in Whitecourt.

Officials said the incident happened around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, December 26.

Two police vehicles were involved in a traffic stop and authorities said, “as a result of the actions of the driver both RCMP members responded by discharging their service pistols and the suspect vehicle fled.”

In a statement ASIRT said the vehicle was later determined to be stolen and it had collided with two police vehicles as it fled the scene.

They have also said the officers fired at the vehicle several times.

When the vehicle was located in a residential neighbourhood minutes later officers transported the 30-year-old male driver and a 25-year-old female passenger to hospital.

The driver suffered gunshot wounds to his left forearm and bicep and was said to be in stable condition in hospital.

The passenger suffered a minor injury and was released.

ASIRT also said that after he fled the traffic stop the driver “became involved in incidents with unrelated citizens before being apprehended by RCMP.”

They said the RCMP were investigating the incidents.

This shooting comes just a day after an RCMP officer shot a man in Vegreville believed to be involved in a possible ATM robbery.

Officials have said the complaint of a robbery at the bank was false and RCMP have laid charges in the case.
