An Edmonton-based company is speaking out about a possible security threat to past and present employees.

On June 23, the head office of Oil City Hospitality was broken into.

A flash drive containing the information of nearly 2000 bar workers was taken out of a laptop, several other items were also stolen.

In a statement released late Wednesday the group said they immediately contacted police.

“Under the direction of the Privacy Commission and the Edmonton Police Service we attempted to contact all employees via E-mail, social media, internal postings,” the statement reads.

The group was then ordered to place a notification in two newspapers in Edmonton and Calgary.

A total of eleven bars and pubs were listed in the warning published Wednesday including:

  • Fluid Lounge
  • Oil City Pubcrawls
  • The Globe Tap House Bar and Grill
  • Pint Public House – Downtown
  • Vinyl Lounge – Edmonton
  • Play Nightclub
  • Rockstars
  • Oil City Roadhouse
  • Buffalo

Edmonton Police are now warning employees to vigilantly monitor their personal information.

“Any mail that they don’t recognize, any bills that seem out of place for places they haven’t been.” Edmonton Police Service spokesperson Clair Seyler said.

“Anything that doesn’t seem appropriate when they contact credit bureau – they’re asked to be put on a Fraud Warning list.”

Affected staff are asked to contact both major credit bureaus: Equifax Canada at 1-800-465-7166 and TransUnion Canada at 1-877-525-3823, and ask that a ‘Fraud Warning’ be placed on their credit file.

Staff are also asked to request a copy of their credit bureau report – just to ensure fraudulent charges have not already been placed, and do the same with all bank and credit card statements.

Police said they don’t believe the theft was targeted.
