A series of shocking driving choices made by a school bus driver caught on video has led a local school bus company to fire the individual involved – and the company said the video will be used to educate future drivers.
The video was captured on a dashboard camera Tuesday, the man behind the camera said he believes he captured a road rage incident.
“As we followed, we thought, no this isn’t over,” the man, who we will refer to as Michael, said.
In the video, the school bus can be seen turning left in front of another vehicle, a dark-coloured sedan, which had the right of way.
Later, the bus pulls away from the curb after dropping off a child – and forced a vehicle headed in the same direction onto the wrong side of the road, before the bus swerves to the left side of a vehicle waiting to make a left turn, passing it, and narrowly missing oncoming traffic.
“With or without kids on the bus, you don’t do that,” Michael said. “But because there were kids on the bus, that just brought it way over the top.”
CTV News spoke to a spokesperson for Golden Arrow, who said the driver in the incident was fired as soon as the video surfaced – and the company has plans in place to use the video for training in the future.
News of the company’s action was good news for one mom, who used to drive a school bus for the same company – she said training is not the problem.
“You have to go out, before you’re certified, and do your tests, so they give you training,” Kerri-Beth Mitchell said.
The president of Golden Arrow declined an on-camera interview Friday, but said the safety of children is the company’s first priority, and they’re revisiting driver training, even considering installing cameras on board buses.
