Rain and a drop in temperatures prompted officials with Edmonton Fire Rescue to lift a city-wide fire ban Friday morning.

Edmonton Fire Rescue made the announcement late Friday morning.

Now that the fire ban has been lifted, Edmontonians are able to use open burning permits, fireworks, backyard fire pits and cooking stoves in parks, as long as they are used with caution.

Backyard fire pits must meet all fire pit requirements, as outlined by the Community Standards Bylaw.

The change was made based on the Fire Weather Index, the province said – the index is monitored daily, and uses temperature, wind conditions, humidity and precipitation levels.

Despite lifting the fire ban, officials said ideal weather conditions haven’t been reached – but the risk was called ‘manageable’ if precautions are taken.
