The man accused in connection to the death of a man in a hit and run more than a week before was arrested Monday.

Edmonton Police said Monday that officers were first called to 86 Street and 106 Avenue just after 9:45 a.m., to investigate reports that a man was passed out inside a vehicle.

Investigators confirmed the vehicle had been stolen, and officers approached the vehicle and woke the accused – before he fled on foot from the vehicle.

The man then broke through a glass patio door into an unoccupied apartment, and suffered serious cuts in the process – but he continued to avoid police, breaking into another apartment and stealing car keys.

He fled that area and hid nearby – but the EPS Canine Unit and officers eventually tracked him to the area of 90 Street and Jasper Avenue at about 10:12 a.m.

Now, Jonathan Jake Cardinal, 31, is facing charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and theft over $5,000, and more charges are pending.

On Thursday, June 19 police identified him as the suspect believed to have stolen a pickup truck owned by Adam Groves, 33, on June 13, before hitting and killing him as he fled from police.
