Edmonton police said Thursday that a man who was arrested following an hours-long standoff in the west end, had been charged.

Police said the 31-year-old man is facing charges of assault, intimidation, careless use, storage or possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm and flight from police.

The charges stem from a standoff that started just before 11 p.m. Sunday, January 17 – it was reported to police that a man allegedly had a weapon, and was driving a vehicle, officers tracked down the suspect vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver fled.

With the help of Air-1, police tracked the man, who was later seen running from the vehicle to a home in the area of 90 Avenue and 154 Street.

While negotiators stayed in contact with the man, officers took safety measures, notified nearby residents and alerted schools in the area.

Then, at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, officers took the man into custody without incident.

EPS said the accused is not being identified as the standoff is related to a domestic violence incident, and releasing his name could identify others involved.
