A 20-year-old man from Fort Saskatchewan has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a fatal rollover on Highway 63 on Saturday.
Redwater RCMP say there were called to the scene of the single-vehicle collision on Highway 63 about 3 kilometres north of Newbrook at about 2 p.m. Saturday, when a Ford F350 welding truck travelling southbound rolled a numer of times before landing on its roof and catching on fire.
Investigators say the 43-year-old male passenger of the vehicle wasn't wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The man was partially ejected from the truck and died at the scene.
Police determined the 20-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol.
He was taken into custody but released on $500 bail.
The man has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operating a motor vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.
He will appear in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court on Nov. 22.
The fatality near Newbrook was the second reported fatality on Highway 63 on Saturday.
Earlier that day, Boyle RCMP responded to a vehicle rollover on Highway 63 at kilometre 91, about 45 kilometres north of Wandering River.
A 68-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers said he had not been wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle when it rolled on its side.
