RCMP said Tuesday that a man in his 70s had died, after his plane went down near an eastern Alberta community Monday afternoon.

Provost RCMP said officers were called Monday at about 4 p.m., over reports of a possible plane crash in a field about 2 kilometres south of Provost, off of Highway 600.

Officers arrived to find the body of the pilot, and sole occupant trapped upside down in the small aircraft – the identity of the man has not been released, but RCMP said he is a 75-year-old Calgary man.

Provost Fire and Rescue and paramedic were on the scene a short time after police arrived.

RCMP said the cause of the crash isn’t known, the aircraft was an amateur built BEDE – Model BD5B.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner’s office has been notified, RCMP said, and will carry out further investigation on the deceased.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the cause; investigators are headed to the scene.
