Nearly 300 students and staff members at a west Edmonton school are being relocated after an early morning electrical fire broke out in a classroom, causing approximately $100,000 in damage on Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to Meadowlark Christian School at 9825 158 Street just after 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Crews were able to put the fire out quickly and contain the blaze to a science classroom and gymnasium storage area. The fire causes smoke and limited water damage and resulted in cancelled classes for the day.

It’s not known at this time what caused the fire but investigators have ruled out arson.

The school district is working to ventilate and clean Meadowlark, as wel as start work on areas affected by the fire.

As a result, students and staff will not be able to use the building over the next few days and instead will be temporarily relocated.

Students Kindergarten to Grade 6 will be temporarily housed at Youngstown School at 103 Avenue and 163 Street.

For students who ride the yellow bus, this will be on the same route they are used to taking with pickup times remaining the same.

Students Grade 7 to 9 will be temporarily moved to Westlawn School at 92 Avenue and 165 Street.

All students not taking a yellow bus will need to walk, take public transit or have their parents drive them.

Meadowlark is a Kindergarten to Grade 9 school with about 270 students and 20 staff members.
