Alberta police officers are in Edmonton Sunday to honour their brothers and sisters who paid the ultimate price in service to the public at the Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day ceremony on the Legislature grounds.

Last year was particularly tough, as two Edmonton area names were added to the monument, but thankfully, there are no new names on this year’s list.

“When they hurt, we all hurt. This year, not to have to add any names is truly a blessing,” Lakeshore Regional Police Service Dale Cox said.

On the last Sunday of September for the last 18 years, the province honours the now 100 officers who have died since 1876.

“Alberta’s police and peace officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep our families and our communities safe,” Minister of Justice Kathleen Ganley said in a press release.“I want to extend my gratitude and unending respect to all officers, retired or active, for their service. We will always remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
