Hours after a series of carjackings prompted investigations involving police in Edmonton, and RCMP in Alberta and Saskatchewan, police in Saskatchewan said one suspect had been arrested, and the search was on for a second suspect.
Maidstone RCMP said one man was arrested Thursday morning in the Maidstone, Saskatchewan area, and was in custody that afternoon.
Meanwhile, police were still looking for a second suspect, described as a man, about 175 cm (5’9”) tall, and believed to be travelling on foot. RCMP said further details on the suspect’s description were not available.
It’s believed the series of incidents started just before midnight Wednesday, when police in Edmonton were called to the area of 118 Avenue and 104 Street, when a woman’s black Ford Fusion was stolen.
About 10 minutes later, police were called to the area of 106 Avenue and 92 Street for a reported robbery. EPS said the suspect vehicle matched the description of the one stolen just before that.
Officers in Strathcona County were notified by police in Edmonton around 12:30 a.m., to watch out for the vehicle taken in the carjacking and reportedly used in the robbery.
Around the same time, RCMP officers were responding to a report of shots fired in Sherwood Park at the Holiday Inn Express on Broadmoor Boulevard. A man was found at that scene suffering from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and neck. He was sent to the Royal Alexandra Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
About 5 minutes later, another armed carjacking occurred at the Flying J gas station. Police confirm that the black Ford Fusion was involved, a shotgun was produced and a black Chrysler 300 was stolen. Both vehicles then left the scene.
Shortly after, a black Ford Fusion was discovered on fire near Highway 16 and Range Road 195. The Chrysler 300 was spotted heading east through the Vegreville area.
Later in the morning, RCMP in the Maidstone Detachment in Saskatchewan said officers were on the scene of an incident in the area.
