The dog responsible for killing a border collie in north Edmonton has been put down at the request of its owner, CTV News has learned.
A veterinary also confirmed the canine was not a pit bull as police originally reported. The dog was an English bulldog lab cross.
"(The owner) realizes that if this is displayed in this particular moment, that it's a canine instinct," said Art Becker, co-ordinator of animal control enforcement for the city. "She's not prepared to go forward with and full well and willingly has given us authority to destroy the dog."
The move comes after a dog ran out of its owner's home in north Edmonton and went after a leashed border collie that was on a walk with its owner.
The two dogs began fighting and the owner of the bulldog tried to intervene, but was bitten on both arms during the struggle.
The collie, named Freckles, was killed in the attack.
About eight police officers chased after the animal until they were able to corner it on the property of its owner's home. Bylaw officers noosed the dog and took it to the pound.
Police tell CTV News these types of attacks normally result in the animal being put down.
Some neighbours said they feel a little more at ease since the dog's death.
"I feel bad, I really do feel bad, but I think that's the best thing," Ollie Karpiak said..
No charges will be laid.
