A bulldog cross is in the city dog pound awaiting its fate after it got loose from its owners home and killed a border collie Sunday.
The incident happened at about 8 a.m. when the owner of the bulldog was leaving her home. The dog ran out of the home and went after a leashed border collie that was on a walk with its owner.
The two dogs began fighting and the owner of the bulldog tried to intervene, but was bitten on both arms during the struggle.
The collie, named Freckles, was killed in the attack.
"Just all of a sudden that dog took her by the head and just grabbed the side of her head," said Freckles' owner Isobel Conrad. "There was so much blood, it was just terrible."
Neighbours phone police at some point during the incident. They arrived shortly after the attack.
About eight police officers chased after the animal until they were able to corner it on the property of its owner's home. Bylaw officers noosed the dog and took it to the pound.
Barry Karpiak, who lives across the street from the dog's owner, saw the incident unfold in his neighbourhood.
"One police officer had a rifle aimed at him just in case he took off they were going to shoot him," said Karpiak.
The attack has left Karpiak feeling uneasy about living near such an aggressive animal.
"If it was my dog I'd put it down because you can't trust him anymore," he said. "They're too vicious a breed."
However, Mayor Stephen Mandel believes the onus is on the pet-owner to prevent incidents like this from happening.
"People make these assumptions 'the dogs are bad' but it's not the dogs it's the pet owners," he said.
In a photo sent to CTV News, it appears as if the bulldog is an unneutered male.
It is unclear whether the dog will be put down.
Police tell CTV News these types of attacks normally result in the animal being put down.
