Officials with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services announced Wednesday that a fire ban had been issued for Edmonton.

In addition officials said the use of open burning, backyard fire pits, cook stoves in parks, and fireworks in Edmonton was restricted.

According to officials, prolonged dry, hot and windy conditions have contributed to a fire danger rating of ‘extreme’ in the city – a rating measured according to the Fire Weather Index.

During the ban, anyone who breaks the ban could be subject to fines or charges if any activity causes a safety issue or fire, including covering costs of emergency services.

The fire ban will remain in place until further notice.
