Days after a single-vehicle crash on Yellowhead Trail over the weekend left one woman dead, police have laid charges against the driver.

Police said Tuesday that the driver, identified as Allan Dean Balay, 47, is facing two charges: impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

The charges stem from a collision that took place on Yellowhead Trail on Sunday at about 5:30 p.m.

Investigators said the car was headed westbound on Yellowhead Trail when witnesses said the driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle, the car flipped and landed on the roadway.

The 41-year-old female passenger, who police said was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Balay was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but he’s expected to survive.

Officials said a short time later that alcohol and speed was believed to have played a role in the collision.

EPS said additional charges are pending.
