An Edmonton police officer has been charged with assault after a man he arrested complained of injuries after being taken into custody early Monday morning.

Constable Haoyin Zheng, 29, arrested a 51-year-old man near 104 Avenue and 145 Street for auto theft at about 3:30 a.m., but the man had to be taken to hospital after complaining of pain in the ribs.

The man was treated for minor bruising and was later released from hospital.

Zheng has been with the Edmonton Police Service for two and a half years and has now been relieved of his patrol duties. He has not been suspended, but has been placed in an administrative position.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2009.

The incident was investigated by the Edmonton Police Professional Standards Branch.

No further charges are expected.
