The price to ride the bus and LRT in Edmonton is increasing by three per cent for most fare categories on Monday.

The adult cash fare will creep up to $3.25 from $3.20 and monthly passes are increasing to $91.50 from $89.

“It’s the first hike that we’ve had since 2013, so it is really a modest fare increase at this time,” said Ken Koropeski, director of special projects for ETS.

The increase was approved by city council in December as part of a new three-year fare structure plan.

Councillors voted to freeze the cash fare at $3.25 for 2017 and 2018, but paper tickets and monthly passes will continue to increase by about three per cent per year.

Koropeski said Edmonton transit fares are comparable to other cities in western Canada.

“In terms of the passes, our adult monthly pass is going to be $91.50 whereas Calgary is $99 per month.”

The Assured Income for Severely Handicapped (AISH) monthly transit pass and fares for Route 747 to the airport are not increasing.

The senior monthly pass is increasing to $14.50 from $14.
