Two former girlfriends of a man accused of killing two prostitutes in Alberta have testified that Thomas Svekla attacked them years ago and they feared for their lives.

The women, who cannot be identified, said the separate incidents took place in the late 1980s, when they were high school girlfriends of Svekla.

The first to testify said she was partying with Svekla and some friends at her family's farm near Fort Saskatchewan when the others left to go to a bar.

She said Svekla returned bleeding and when she went to get him bandages, he threw her to the carpet and choked her.

The second woman described a similar scene in a bar, saying Svekla suddenly became angry and held her to the wall with his arm on her neck, choking her.

Svekla is charged with killing Theresa Innes, 36, and Rachel Quinney, 19.
