RCMP in Spruce Grove said a local man had been charged after police received reports of sexual assaults against a youth.
Police said on August 9, RCMP arrested and charged 48-year-old Thomas Ledrew, with sexual assault and sexual exploitation.
The charges were laid after a youth reported offences that allegedly took place in August 2017.
“It is always concerning when a young person comes forward with these types of complaints,” Cpl. Kim Mueller with RCMP said.
“The young person shared the complaints with their parents earlier this month and we got engaged immediately and arrested Mr. Ledrew within days of this being reported to us,” Mueller said.
Ledrew is scheduled to appear in court September 13.
The name of the victim will not be released as it is under a publication ban.
Cpl. Mueller said investigators had no evidence to suggest there are other victims.
“Based on past investigations that we’ve done as police officers, when we look at child assault cases, unfortunately, there are multiple victims,” Mueller said.
The City of Spruce Grove confirmed to CTV News Ledrew had been employed by the city since 2002, first as a casual firefighter, then as a full-time firefighter and finally as a Community Peace Officer in the spring of 2017. He resigned before his arrest.
RCMP are still investigating.
