Greenpeace is demanding that the Alberta government set up an independent investigation into the deaths of hundreds of ducks on an oilsands tailings pond.

The call from the environmental organization comes after the ducks came down on a Syncrude Canada wastewater pond near Fort McMurray early last week.

"We want to government to immediately introduce legislation to ensure that no new tailings ponds are introduced or expanded and that existing ponds be accessed for compliance by independent monitors," Greenpeace activist Mike Hudema said.

Greenpeace also says independent wildlife and environmental experts should be sent out to search other tailings ponds for dead wildlife.

Over the weekend, ConocoPhillips Canada said eight birds, including three loons, had settled on a briny pond at the company's oilsands project northeast of the city.
