Police say just after midnight, a Pontiac Grand Prix crashed into a ditch on Highway 28, east of Range Road 160 and Smoky Lake.
The passenger, 42-year-old Vernon Allan Calliou of Fishing Lake, Alta. died at the scene.
The 38-year-old male driver from Sputinow, Alta. suffered multiple injuries and was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Edmonton.
Investigators do not believe that alcohol was a factor in this collision, but police suspect the victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Smoky lake RCMP are still investigating.
