Search teams scrambled to find survivors in an avalanche that took place near Kimberley, B.C.

Five snowmobilers were sledding in the Hell Roaring area, west of St. Mary's Lake, near Kimberley, when they were caught by an avalanche.. One of the snowmobilers was able to free himself and find a cell phone signal to alert authorities.

27-year-old Clayten Sean Smith of Kimberley was confirmed dead, the other four snowmobilers survived the avalanche and attempted to revive Smith but were unsuccessful.

The 2008/2009 season has been deadly for outdoor enthusiasts; more than 20 people have been killed in avalanches in Western Canada.
