Parks Canada have said no to development of a proposed heritage themed hotel in Jasper National Park.

The 66-room luxury hotel was part of a proposal by Maligne Tours, a tourism company operating in Jasper since 1953.

13 out of 14 elements of Maligne Tours' redevelopment plan, which included tent cabins as well as cultural and outdoor tourism experiences, were approved by Parks Canada to move on to the design stage.

The decision to reject the building of a 66-room hotel in the Maligne Valley was made after extensive input from the public, stakeholders and Aboriginal groups, according to the release.

Maligne Lake is the largest and deepest lake inside Jasper National Park, and attracts an estimated 380,000 visitors each year.

In May, the $21M Glacier Skywalk project, located in Jasper National Park and run by Brewster Travel Canada, opened to tourists.
