RCMP have arrested a Canadian citizen in Edmonton who is suspected of supporting a terrorist group that is linked to suicide bombings in 2009 that killed five American soldiers in Iraq.

Faruq Khalil Muhammad Isa, 38, remains in custody pending a request by the United States to extradite him to stand trial.

A police spokesperson confirms officers arrested the man without incident at the request of the FBI.

"The arrest was made by RCMP members in Edmonton today, earlier this morning, on behalf of an FBI application for extradition," said Sgt. Patrick Webb with the RCMP.

"This arrest is in support of an FBI investigation into a suicide bombing in Iraq in April 2009, which is believed to claim the lives of 5 U.S. soldiers," he added.

The man, who is described as a conspirator, is also known to Canadian authorities as Sayfildin Tahir Sharif.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the 38-year-old was charged based on evidence gathered in Canadian court-authorized wiretaps and search warrants.

He was expected to appear in a federal courtroom in downtown Edmonton Thursday. If convicted of being a conspirator by the American, he faces a potential life sentence.
