The RCMP major crimes unit has been called in to investigate after human remains were found in a burned out vehicle in Parkland County.

According to an RCMP spokesperson officers, a canine unit and fire crews were called out to the car fire Friday morning north of Highway 16 between Range Roads 13 and 14.

“At the moment they have not disturbed the scene and they are waiting for the fire investigators to arrive,” Cpl. Sharon Franks explained.

“It's an unusual file so often times they will be called in as experts to come and assist with those investigations and that's what this is this case.”

However, Franks added that the death has not yet been ruled suspicious.

“If it turns out that it is a crime scene we want to be able to gather as much evidence as we can before the scene is actually disturbed,” she explalined.

“There will perhaps be searchers brought in, perhaps the police dog service will come and assist perhaps there's been something discarded, so they'll want to make sure that there's a thorough investigation and that's specifically why major crimes has been called.”

The deceased person’s identity and age have not been released.

Anyone with information has been asked to call the Stony Plain detachment or Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
