Westlock RCMP said Wednesday that a St. Albert man was facing charges, over allegations he impersonated a peace officer – while police in St. Albert are investigating the same individual for similar charges.

Back on Thursday, July 27, RCMP in Westlock received reports from a driver, who had allegedly been pulled over by a man who presented himself as a police officer.

The driver said they had been followed by a light-coloured SUV, from Westlock, which activated red and blue lights as the vehicles drove closer to Fawcett, Alberta.

The man told the driver they had been pulled over for an alleged traffic violation, and asked to see their driver’s licence, registration and insurance.

The male suspect was described as Caucasian, with short dark hair, wearing dark blue clothing and a hat.

The driver’s licence, registration and insurance were returned, and the driver was asked to have their thumb scanned by a device the man in question had. The driver was then allowed to leave.

Two days later, the same detachment received another complaint, after a truck and trailer had been pulled over by the driver of a similar SUV.

In both cases, the drivers were not hurt.

The investigation led to charges laid against Mark Andrew Capowski, 36. He is facing two counts of impersonating a peace officer.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Westlock on Wednesday, August 23.

Officers with St. Albert RCMP helped investigators, they searched Capowski’s home in St. Albert – and seized evidence that prompted their own investigation on the accused.

On Wednesday, RCMP asked for the public’s help to find a grey 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, with black push-bars on the front bumper, tinted windows and black rims. The vehicle has an Alberta licence plate: BWL 2384.

It’s believed the vehicle may have been used in the two incidents reported to Westlock RCMP, and could be connected to other details cathered by investigators with St. Albert RCMP.

Anyone with details on this is asked to call St. Albert RCMP, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
