Tougher drinking and driving laws are coming to Alberta. But it won't be right away. Although legislation passed its third and final reading Tuesday night, Bill 26 likely won't be enforced on the streets for at least six months.

The bill includes some controversial elements including licence suspensions for blowing slightly under the legal limit.

Although the legislation passed, not everyone in the government supported the bill. Richard Marz is not running in the next election, but he's not leaving his post of 15 years without speaking out. He had urged his Tory colleagues to not support Bill 26.

"What point will you be happy and claim success, are we going to be doing this in three or four years again and going down to zero? I suspect that will be the case," said Marz.

The premier had wanted the new law in place by Christmas, but the solicitor general says it will likely be another six months before the bill will be enforced.
