In a report, City officials announced that the new Walterdale Bridge would not open to traffic until mid-2017

The city said the most recent delay is due to colder weather in the forecast not allowing crews to pour asphalt.

This is not the first time the project has seen a delay – it was first set to open in the fall of 2015, but steel brought in from South Korea was delayed, and it put the project one year behind schedule.

Back in the spring of 2016, the mayor declared the bridge would be completed by the end of the year -- on Thursday, the mayor said he wasn’t surprised by the delay.

“At that time that was the best information we had from the contractor,” Mayor Don Iveson said. “I gather they’ve had some additional challenges.”

Construction first started in 2013.

With the new scheduled completion, the project will be nearly two years behind schedule.

The city said the contractor has been paying $10,000 a day since June, 2015. In November, the financial penalty for the project’s delay will increase to $17,000 a day.

Despite the delay, officials would not provide a firm date on the new bridge opening to traffic.

Work on the pedestrian path, landscaping and removing the old bridge could continue into 2018.
